Did you know that in March Madness (one of the biggest tournaments for college basketball) that there are over 9 million dollars spent on just betting. No commercials or anything, just betting. College basketball is so much more interesting than NBA basketball, but in the NBA the stadiums are bigger so more people come. People don't realize how lazy players are in the NBA. College basketball is so much more interesting than NBA because they try harder in games, they rebound, which leads to big things, and there has been more money spent on March Madness than any other tournament in college basketball.
Not every college athlete makes it professionally, which means that many athletes needs to prepare for a career in something else. Injuries cut athletes careers short, even among thoses who become professional. By providing scholarship to many people who would not otherwise be able to attend college, college athletes do a great service in our country. College athletics are important and worthwhile because they contribute immeasurably to the pleasure that students get from attending college.
College sports are a major part of American culture. College athletes devote hours upon hours a week to their sports training, but unfortunately, sports can take up a lot of time and distract from other important activities. This can harm academics, as athletes have to balance sports and academics, especially at a college. Participating in sports is almost like working a part-time job and having to balance school too which can be difficult to do, and focus may be rendered on one task and not both. Furthermore, athletes will be on scholarships too, which is why college athletes should not be paid.
Statistically showing, at least 100,000 college football players get hurt yearly. College football player’s should get paid to play because these players put themselves at risk for injury, college football is a job, not p.e, and it will help players adjust to college socially and economically. Colleges and the NCAA can make money selling jerseys and other souvenirs that might include the likeness of players, yet the actual players never receive a cent. Every time a football player steps onto the field, they’re risking themselves for injury.
Sports is a small part of the college experience, college is about obtaining a higher education. Fr. John Jenkins says “Our relationship to these young people is to educate them, to help them
Another reason why college players should be getting paid is that that the NCAA organization are treating the players like workers. These competitors are playing games and getting cash to the college consistently, yet aren't getting any money themselves. These competitors are working for the schools and are doing a support of the school that appears to go unnoticed. This absence of pay is not seen anyplace else in the work put and shouldn't be seen here. Some even contend, "School competitors are being misused by their schools, which make a huge number of dollars off of intercollegiate games" (Should to Undergraduate Competitors Get Paid?).
Intercollegiate sports discourage education for the athletes, which is often not beneficial to the athletes themselves. Most college athletes have to devote 40-60 hours each week to practice, plus recovering, “working out, and attending team meetings” (“College Football is Ruining Education” S. Almond, newsrepublic.com). This greatly limits the amount of time that they have to study
There are several things that contribute to the college experience. It is a right of passage for young adults to leave home for the first time and enter the world of new friendships and academic challenges. But nothing compares to the experience of participating in college athletics. There is a level of exhilaration that is unmatched for the freshman student attending their first football game in the fall, avoiding homework while catching a volleyball game with roommates, or watching their basketball team play for a conference championship for a chance invitation to the “Big Dance.” These experiences last longer than the college years as they continue to support their teams as alumni and passionate fans.
Re “Take it from a former Division I athlete: College sports are like Jim Crow” (Op-Ed, Jan. 11): Writer and former collegiate track star Victoria L. Jackson attempts to bring to light the disadvantages placed on revenue-generating athletes by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and more specifically, how these disadvantages end up deteriorating society’s view of African-Americans. Throughout Jackson’s explanation, there are key points that she fails to address in her argument against revenue-generating collegiate sports such as: what makes playing sports in college so appealing anyways? And why would a high-school student like myself devote so much time and effort to a game, especially when the odds of “going pro” are so
From the time a student athlete steps on campus to play for a NCAA program to the time they graduate or move on to the pros; they are an employee. From opening weekends to tournaments to championships, college sports are one of the celebrated things in America and generates, as a whole, billions of dollars. Not all division one athletic programs generate millions of dollars, but they do generate money. Where does that money go? That money goes to the NCAA who then sends it out to schools athletic departments.
The stress can get so intense, it feels paralyzing. That’s why it is important than ever for schools to invest in their athletic programs,” states the sports article “Should Schools get rid of Sports.” Schools should keep their sports programs because they help improve academics, help improve mental and emotional health, and improves social skills like being on a team. Schools should not get rid of their sports programs because they help with student’s academics.
College sports are a vital part of colleges ' because: they bring in billions of dollars of revenue, they give athletes a chance for a good future, and they draw in potential students. College sports are important due to the fact that they bring in revenue for universities. Last year at the University of Oregon the athletic department gained roughly $196 million in total revenue for the college. This money can be used to further the education of thousands of students through scholarships, better classroom supplies, and new teachers. The more money colleges are able to make from sporting events allows spending money to put back into the attendees.
Playing a college sport for a “big time school” or a division 1 school, is often time the dream that many high school student athletes have since their childhoods and often time some of them achieve that dream. However, that small percentage of players that make it and actually get playing time find that their dream is more of an actual nightmare. College sports are dictated strictly by the NCAA which set strict rules and bylaws that cannot be broken or else you lose a certain amount of eligibility. Now, this may not sound too bad from the outside peeking in, but if you ask an athlete currently on a team in a major conference, their answer may surprise you, especially since many athletes want a union. The South Eastern Conference for example otherwise known as SEC for short is arguable the best conference for college football and being a player on that team can lead to a lot of benefits.
The End of College Football Video Games Fourth and ten, all logic tells one to punt the ball, pin the opponent, and play defense, but why do that when it’s more fun to throw it deep? Children of all ages have previously enjoyed the thrill of playing EA’s NCAA college football video game. Unfortunately, due to various reasons, the creation of the game has been discontinued. With all previous versions of the game out of date, it is nearly every young gamer’s wish to once again be enthralled by the thrill of college football, in the platform of a video game. College football will never again be portrayed in a video game because of the following reasons: student athletes can receive no financial compensation for their efforts, EA was never able
Sport in high school shouldn’t be taken away because it allow new students to make friends a lot easier. If we didn’t have sports in schools then there wouldn’t be professional sports anymore because the kids won’t be able to practice and not every kid has money to buy a ball or net and basketball hoop. It helps the student’s grades in classes because if they have low grades in one class they can’t play the sport so they try their hardest to raise the grade so they can play the sport. This is why I think they shouldn’t take away sports in high schools.
