Imagine you’re a high school senior who is one of the top recruits in the country, you have two offers on the table. One from a university that guarantees a high compensation, the other from a university that doesn't have a wealthy athletic department. Now imagine that they are both equal on the athletic field, It would be hard for you to chose the offer from the university that doesn't have a wealthy athletic department. This is what will happen to colleges if we pay college athletes, it will wash away traditions, that we hold very dear. For example “the camaraderie of game day, the tailgating, the atmosphere of a stadium packed with nearly 100,000 fans and the pride of cheering for a university team -- are at stake.” - NCAA President Mark Emmert. Paying college athlete would mean losing what most college sports fan love, the high level of competition.

Another question you have to ask is were is the money going to come from, as most colleges already lose money on sports. Then if you have to pay the athletes It will make colleges go into bidding wars with each other, you will see less competition and smaller colleges will have to cut out “unnecessary sports”.
