Poetry Analysis - The Raven and Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was an American poet who lived from 1809 to 1849. He died an untimely death, but wrote many great works in his short life. Two of these imaginative pieces, both poems, include Annabel Lee, published in 1849, and The Raven, published in 1845. These poems are very similar in many ways. Like most of Poe’s works, they focus on love and loss, and sanity versus madness.
I am here today to prove Mr. Poe's innocence and I hope to show you, the jury, that Mr. Poe is being wrongly convicted. I have found a series of evidence that proves that Mr. Poe is insane and is not capable of knowing what he is doing is wrong. He does not think like we do. He hears things that we don't hear. He is an insane person that needs to be put into Mental Hospital.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. He was an American writer, critic and editor but was best known for his poems and short stories. At a young age, Edgar grew up to rough circumstances. Poe’s mother was a teenage widow when she married David Poe, and Edgar was their second son. Poe’s father had a fairly good reputation as an actor, but he had an even wider reputation as an alcoholic.
Edgar began writing during the Romantic time period, and there were major influences during that time that inspired others to begin writing. Poe’s major influence was Lord Byron. It is said that he was the writer that influenced Poe to become the writer he was. At the time Poe was born and began writing the main focus was on individual perception and imagination. He was also influenced by other authors such as: Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Browning, and E. T. A. Hoffmann.

‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Allan Poe is an eminently beautiful yet tragic poem centred around the theme of a forbidden love between two people, and the many obstacles that they overcome in order to be together. At the time he wasn’t only mourning the death of Annabel Lee but also the death of his wife a few years back which is the reason that he wrote The Raven.
