The Story of an Hour (1894) by Kate Chopin does a phenomenal job delicately layering Louise’s pain, sorrow, disbelief, and then, surprisingly, relief. This is a story about the thoughts and actions of a woman when she discovers her husband’s, Brently, death. When this woman, Louise Mallard, discovered the tragic event, she seems sad and heart broken but is actually relieved. In paragraph 11, Louise says the word ‘free’ two times. As we go through the emotional rollercoaster alongside the ‘mourning’ widow, the events lead up to Brently, her husband, arriving at their house completely untouched. When Louise sets eyes on her husband, and sees that he is alive and well, she is so shocked that she dies from “the joy that kills.” Taking evidence from different area, I have come to the conclusion that The Story of an Hour it was not only …show more content…

However, when she goes to her room, the audience sees her acts differently, as if she was happy and relieved, crying tears of joy, exclaiming, “Free! Body and soul free!” She no longer had to fear for the well being of her body and spirit, her mind was also free, she escaped the barbaric relationship alive.
