Arguments Against Feminism In Speak

Society today doesn’t realize how badly women can be treated; they say there is no need for feminism for women in the United States. To me, this is a clearly ignorant statement, but perhaps I am less blind to the truth than the average joe. Women not only need feminism in countries outside of the US, but also in the US. I find it incredibly laughable how often the statement comes from men, like they could possibly know if a woman needs feminism, but it seems to stem from not fully understanding what it is in the first place. So, to explain a little, feminism is not the degrading of men and idolizing of women, or the empowerment of women to be able to be above the law, but rather for women to be treated as equal individuals to men -not only by law or in the workplace- but at home, in public, and socially in general.

Women are often sent to do very menial and easy jobs, as if it’s all they can handle. In Speak, Melinda experiences this while going to work with her own father, who works with insurance- “He sets up a card table for me in his office. My job is to put calendars into envelopes, seal them up, and stick on mailing labels. He sits at his desk and talks to buddies on his phone.” Clearly, even from just this example, men certainly don’t always offer any more benefits or get any more work done then a woman does. However, the National Center for Education Statistics shows that women frequently have to work three years more in teaching position to become a principal than men. Why would this, in any situation, be justified? Both genders could do the exact same job, but somehow, a woman is not as efficient as a man. That is what that statistic suggests the bosses of these workers think. That is something I personally believe should not even cross anyone’s
