Arguments Against Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is one of the new theories of potential treatment for various diseases such as cancer, though this cure is still under research. This can be a medical breakthrough to cancer treatment, the stem cells are used to regenerate tissue to replace the old damaged cells due to chemotherapy. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to the particular research, which will be discussed in this essay.

Cancer has been a major problem to the world and the percentages of people diagnosed with cancer have increased since the years. It has become a “death sentence” to many patients as the percentage of surviving ranges from 98% for testicular cancer to 1% for pancreatic cancer. Cancer is when some of the body cells begin to divide …show more content…

Such as how it’s against many religions, due to the fact that these stem cells was is still living and by killing it is nonmoral. As people think it’s unfair that the stem cell was created to be destroyed, to be tested on with drugs. The other argument is the cell nuclear replacement theory, this forms the basis of the stem cell research that it uses the nucleus of one cell and replace the old cell. This way it can promote health division with no defects, some researchers disagree with the use of killing one for the other (source 15). Other arguments include the fact that the stem cell technologies will be expensive and will only be available in wealthy countries, the 3rd world countries will have to suffer through the diseases. This is also due to the fact it needs highly qualified doctors to undergo this job, as treating cancer wouldn’t be an easy job to accomplish. The stem cell research would also deviate efforts from other health strategies, as at this stage where the research is not complete, Researchers have no clue what the benefits will be and what harms it will cause. This research will interfere with the genome involves “playing with god”, this is against some of the religions and that playing with the genes are not accepted. As playing with genes causes people deviate to “perfect divine creation” which is morally wrong. Allowing stem cell research is the thin end of a wedge leading to neo-eugenics, ‘designer’ children, and discrimination against the less-than-perfect, that people are now going to “create” and “design” their children as humans are able to “play” with the stem cells which is wrong. Eventually, an ‘immortal’ population could evolve and that would create its own moral problems, this is all after the success in stem cells research. Not only will it enhance the medical industry it’ll also create this environment where people will “design” their children (source 14).
