The legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic of debate for many years, but the arguments have increased dramatically over the last few years. Many states are pushing for the legalization of marijuana not only for medicinal purposes but also for recreational use. Marijuana has been classified as one of the most dangerous drugs that exist and the federal government does not recognize it for medical purposes. In recent years, there has been more push for the government to review and change their stance on marijuana. Users have found many ways to partake in marijuana including smoking joints, using pipes, or often mixing with food such as brownies, cookies, or tea. It is a drug that provides a high or mind-altering state for individuals. The cannabis plant contains more than 500 chemicals including more than 100 that are chemically related to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). (NIDA). THC is the psychoactive chemical in marijuana that provides the mind-altering high that users seek. According to a Time Magazine study in 2012, marijuana is the most popular drug in the world. It is estimated that between 119 million and 224 million adults (18 or older) are marijuana users. (Time) Marijuana can be found and is popular in many different countries and regions throughout the world. While the illicit drug is illegal in most areas, the popularity and availability are high. In a recent study done in the United States, it is reported that in 2016, 9.4% of 8th graders reported they had used marijuana within the past year. The drug may possibly be useful for medical purposes and not deserving of Schedule I classification. Many states have already begun making Cannabis legal for medicinal purposes and the DEA has asked for more research to be done. The DEA does not recognize Cannabis for medical use today, but with more research and results, that could change in the future. Like many drugs or controlled substances, if Cannabis is proven to provide medical results, it should be legalized for that purpose and made available to the people and families who need it. There are too many negatives and risks involved to make it available for recreational use and allow anyone to get their hands on it at free will. It has been classified as a dangerous drug for many years based on the negative risks that are associated with its use. These risks still exist and therefore marijuana should remain illegal for recreational use. Hopefully, with better research and results, the drug will be shown to be effective for medical purposes and we can treat illnesses with it that are not treatable
