Persuasive Essay On Legalizing Marijuana

Marijuana has been around for as long as Mexican immigrants have. Way back at the end of the Revolution of 1910, Mexican immigration to the US spiked, bringing along their traditional means of intoxication. Eric Schlosser was a writer back then, who recounts that police officers said, "marijuana incited violent crimes, aroused a "lust for blood," and gave its users "superhuman strength." This began the intense social stigma surrounding marijuana. Recently though, doctors and other researchers have stumbled upon the realization that marijuana does no such thing. Some states have lifted laws against marijuana, but there are still arguments among the citizens that marijuana should not be legalized. Marijuana should, however, be legalized, because: the number of drug arrests for possession in the states that have legalized it has decreased exponentially, marijuana actually has medical benefits/treats diseases, and there are currently legal drugs that kill more people than marijuana. Marijuana has currently been legalized in eight different states, and, at this very moment in time, no deaths due to marijuana usage have still been documented. Alcohol, which has no health benefits, was prescribed by doctors to treat many different illnesses not even 300 years ago and was even an ingredient in over-the-counter cough syrup, and alcohol actually had negative effects. What about alcohol makes it okay for it to be legal that marijuana doesn't have? Tobacco, another overly socially-normalized drug, is, despite not being legal to be sold or shared with minors, is routinely obtained by them, which results in stunted lungs for the rest of their life.
