Whether it was the one boy that thought he was the best dodgeball player to grace the sport in elementary school, or the girl who thought that she was better than everyone because she was fortunate enough to own an American Girl doll. Regardless of the pretense, everyone has been exposed to the disease that is arrogance. Arrogance is the child of pride that has been coddled for too long before it became a monster that nobody could defeat. As famous speaker and author John C. Arrogance is a word that is steeped in history as it has been in use since the creation of the word in the fourteenth century. Arrogance is a derivative of the Latin word arrogare, with the word later becoming arrogant meaning “to claim for oneself” (etymonline.com). Due to the word being seen as a flaw in character, arrogance and its synonyms, bumptiousness, self-importance, hubris, and pomposity (thesaurus.com), share a negative connotation. As stated by Merriam-Webster, arrogance is defined as “an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions” (merriam-webster.com). The word is normally used to describe someone who thinks of themselves as higher than the next person. According to Hanan Parvez, “A person can become arrogant when he/she achieves something that their peers have yet to accomplish.” A typical arrogant person tends to act as if he is “superior, more worthy and more important than the others”
