Arthur Shawcross was an american serial killer also known as the Genesee killer. He claimed his victims after paroled early. He later followed a conviction manslaughter of two children.A professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and also an authority on violent behavior identified Arthur as “one of the most horrendous examples of the unwarranted release of a prisoner.” Shawcross was born June 6, 1945 in Kittery, Maine. Arthur’s family later moved to Watertown in New York State when he was very young. They did many tests on Arthur which showed his intelligence to be subnormal or “borderline retarded” he received A’s and B’s in his first two years of grade school. he was later tested to have an I.Q. of 86, signifying a low average intelligence. …show more content…
By this time Arthur had divorced his first wife and gave up his rights to his eighteen month old son, whom he never saw again. His second wife named Linda saw unusual behavior in him especially when he liked starting fires; An army psychiatrist let her know that Shawcross gained “sexual enjoyment” from fire starting. After being dropped from the Army, Shawcross moved in with his wife (who would soon divorce him) from Oklahoma to Clayton, New York where he began committing crimes such as arson and burglary. Mostly prostitutes that were around the area(apart from June Stott, who was a local and was the first one of his victims to be mutilated after her death). He was captured less than two years later. He was convicted of 11 murders. With the charge of a 12th murder not officially charged to him. The victims were. All his victims were killed in Monroe County, except for Elizabeth Gibson, who was killed in neighboring Wayne County.
June Cicero’s body was discovered by surveillance on January 3, 1990. Shawcross was spotted by the surveillance team (and by an eyewitness) standing near his car, apparently urinating, on a bridge on a bridge over Salmon Creek; where June’s body was dumped. He was stopped in Spencerport, New York on January 3, 1990. He was taken into custody and later was arrested.
In November 1990, Shawcross was tried for 10 murders in Monroe County. Shawcross pleaded not guilty for reason of insanity. A few months later, Shawcross was taken to Wayne County to be tried for Gibson’s murder. He pleaded guilty and was given a life
