Charles Starkweather, Nebraska’s most notorious killer, murdered eleven people and two dogs. Charles was born in Nebraska on November 24, 1938, with Genu Varum, a birth defect that caused his legs to curve outward. He also suffered from a speech impediment, which caused a lot of bullying. He grew up in a supportive family with seven siblings who were all known for being well behaved. Charles eventually dropped out of high school at sixteen. He started working at a local newspaper business as a truck unloader. He was a fan of James Deans ‘rebellious’ image and began to model him. Starkweather believed that he was above the law and claimed that someone else had committed the murder. Charles got a thrill out of committing the murder and he was happy he had Caril by his side. He realized that he needed to continue committing robberies because of his poor financial state and the fact that he was fired from his job. Charles also realized that Fugate’s family did not like him at all. With a loaded gun, Charles decided to visit the Fugate’s family on January 21, 1958. It is said that Charles wanted to go hunting with Caril’s stepfather. In the house was Caril’s stepfather, Marion, Carils mom, Velda and their two year old child, Betty Jean. Carils mom, Velda told Charles to stay away from her daughter and that resulted in an argument. Charles left and called Marion Barletts work place from a pay phone and said that Marion would be out for a while due to illness. Charles went back to Caril’s house and waited for her to come home. When Caril arrived home from school, he told her about the argument and she went into the house to talk to her mom about what occurred.
