“Behind every great fortune is a crime.” The nature of the world we live in and the art industry are complex. Being an artist is a tough job. Well-known artists usually get a lot of media attention on any regular basis while some up-and-coming artists, get little or no such attention. Therefore, artist are always competing among themselves to come up with the best work to captivate people, stay on top, make a name for themselves and also a living allowance.
Introduction In our current society, the media is a very powerful medium which cultivates the way the society thinks and behaves. At this stage of the political economy, the intellectual mode of production is largely made through the media industry. Aspects such as Hollywood, television and movies, they frame and direct our thinkings and values towards the direction as they desire.
Art plays a huge role in the world we live in today, particularly in more developed countries. It is seen in everything from culture, to hobbies, to expression of ideas. Art is seen in everything and has an overall outstanding effect on many things in daily life. Even in countries that have very little material comfort, art is still a prevalent form of expressing ideas and capturing imagination in a material object. Some may think that art is more wasteful than it is beneficial to the world, but many would agree that art has a very important impact on many aspects of life, and in turn, is an overall beneficial use of time and energy.
Dick Netzer once said (1999), “While market failure justifies government support for the arts, it does not explain when, on whose behalf (other than for the arts’ sake), and to what extent governments actually do intervene” (p. 35). Funding is something widely accepted and reasonably popular within society today. The United States government has provided a means for several public funding programs throughout the years. However, within the last decade that percentage dedicated to the arts has dropped dramatically (Knight, 2017, p. 341). As new businesses and websites pop up with the drive of social media popularity and the expression of individuality, crowdfunding has begun to rear its head (Brabham, 2016, p.1).
People have different perspectives on art. Some artists see their work all about social change. For others art is just a way to express themselves and doesn 't need a social or political drive. Should foundations fund artists to create the art they want to make because artists are valuable to society or should they fund only work that promotes social change? Protest art on the streets may be as powerful as Pablo
Reasons for the inflow of the artists in the Lower East Side in the 1980s are various, one of which lies in the essential nature of the artists. First and foremost, given the unstable career patterns of the artists, it is tempting to understand that their payments are also precarious. Despite some of them obtain the sponsorship from the commerce and state, the overall artists’ income is still quite low (Ley, 2003, p. 2528). In addition, since the artists have the aesthetic experiences and sensibilities to change ugliness to beauty, it is commonplace to argue that the artists in the city have high cultural capital but low economic capital (Ley, 1996, p301).
It is up to the artists to create a beautiful piece that pertains to an idea that reinforces the ideas of society. In the Public Construction article, the author stresses the idea that public art is constantly observed by the community, so it needs to be created in collaboration with the people. For DAMA, whose murals are commissions, their effort is evaluated by the community, so they must focus on the needs of the public. For me this semester, my evaluation of effort is translated by my participation and achievement of goals. In mural making, not everyone needs to be a skilled artist to be able to help paint.
Lack of Funding for The Arts Classical music has always had the ability to impact human lives. Whether it’s a child listening to soft classical music to improve brain development, a group of people watching an intense scene of a film which has Verdi’s Requiem II Dies irae blaring through the speakers, or even a teenager listening to his favorite heavy metal band which originated its sound based off Bach, Beethoven, or Vivaldi’s multiple pieces which had deep dissonant chords. Music has had an impact on art, music, people, poetry, movies, plays, dances, architecture, militaries and even weddings. The impact and the influence that this core genre of music has on society does not match the funding that it deserves in today’s
Artists should use their music in advertising. The goal of an advertisement is to sell you a product or service. In itself, an advertisement is unenjoyable to watch, but with music, it can benefit the artist and the advertiser. When a small artist or musician signs a deal to have their music in a companies advertisements it can get them exposure, and money. With new apps capable of streaming music for very cheap, many artists need the extra cash flow from corporates to stay in the business.
Artwork is all around the world, but is it really worth the resources and time for it? In the essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” by Ryhs Southan he discusses the purpose of art and explains the group, Effective Altruism. The main argument is that Effective Altruism do not agree with using resources and time on artwork. Effective Altruism is against artwork the resources, and time it uses up that do not contribute to the poor.
When we look back at the history of art, we can see the expression of a plethora of subjects such as the human condition and many other themes of the same nature. As time progresses, this form of human expression will be regarded as a highly valuable facet in our lives, as it also marked important times in our history. But what is it that makes the works of artists valuable? Is it because of its inimitability? Or is it because it makes us deeply contemplative and philosophical?
In many schools across America, sports have more funding than the arts, like theater, art programs, music, dance, etcetera. This is unfair and schools should fund the arts and sports equally. Critics may argue and say that sports are more expensive and should have more funding. I do not agree with this. Art programs help students in all areas of life and it is unfair to the students who participate in the arts.
Artists who have it should cherish it and share it with others, because not everyone has it. Sharing arts with others would bring prosperity to our society. Therefore, the art industry remains creatively due the gift motivation. Finally, from the Hyde’s
People say that spending money on arts in education is a waste of resources. This article states, “The academic benefits of art education are unproven”(See). Although, there are many examples and observations of art improving the education of a child and helping them to focus their attention to the task at hand. It is also stated, “Listening to music, however, does not seem to have a positive impact. Or at least there is no evidence to suggest that it does.
This research was carried out not to only show awareness toward the society but also why people should take art seriously. Often times, we can see lots of people debating whether art is important or not. This happened because the lack of exposure and knowledge that has been taught to them. Art can help to shape the society and affect the society to broaden their view of perspective in life by referring on the artworks because each work of art can give different meanings to life.
