Courtney Stawarz says, “Sports are important, I understand that. However, Elizabeth Kolbert has a valid argument.” She says, while Americans tend to put more emphasis on sports rather than learning, it is not the children that are at fault. She sees how sports are related to grades being you have to make sure you are eligible to play. Children have to watch their grades in order to be able to play sports in schools.
Many schools are cutting athletic, art, and music programs to save money; however, this has a negative impact on students. Schools needs those programs to keep students in school and build character. Furthermore, budget cuts should not be made without a thorough evaluation process. Make note of all relevant programs, and prioritize them. Those that are more important should be funded first, and the programs that are less important should be funded only after key programs have been taken care
It is apathetic that students can’t play because of their background. Since necessities like food and paying bills have to be a family's top priority, their kids who could be star players are forced to not play because their families just can't afford it. Students can not decide what family they will be born into, so why do we exclude them from things just because of it? However, sports also have their downsides in that they take a lot of funding away from core classes, an excerpt from Amanda Ripley’s article “The Case against High School Sports” states that cheerleading is given around four times the amount of funding as math instruction. This is absurd since the core curriculum should be seen in tandem with sports since these core classes also build important skills like problem solving and critical
They also shouldn’t have to worry about feeling left out or excluded from the school community due to the biased unequal funding for their sport. Students and athletes have the right to be able to pursue any sport that they are passionate about without having to worry about any of these factors. This means providing these teams with resources based on the need for them rather than their popularity or past successes. Equal funding would not only improve the quality of the team, but also push athletes to push themselves more than ever, and reach their full potential. Also, this could encourage more students to participate in sports and extracurricular
I think that if the school cut all the sports programs that everyone who plays them would get really mad. And not only the players would be mad but the fans and people that like to watch them would also be very upset. This is why I would be for it because the players already whine enough but if they got there sports taken away we would never here the end of it. So that and also the money made for the sports program alone makes most of our schools money from people paying to get into the games. Some of the other reasons that the school should not cut the sports program is that’s how the school makes most of its money and they can’t save if they don’t have money coming in.
Many people have the mindset that in High school and College is all about the different types of sports that the school might offer. Those types of people are the owns that might think that it’s better for the school to send more of the funding thats the school gets to spend it on sports rather than education. Which in the article that I read “ The case against high school sports” by Amanda Ripley explains all the different types of perspective that others have on the idea that sports in general that is just a waste of money and that school should spend the money on better equipment for educational reasons and for new teachers. Through out the whole article there are two different side on why sports shouldn’t be in high school and why sports
The text also states that schools should charge students for sports and give them what they need most for school. It happens already in some schools where the sports program has lots of money put towards it, and other aspects of books and other supplies get left
World War I brought many new ideas and different concepts that would either benefit or cause major consequences throughout the war. This was the time of the incredibly dreadful “Trench warfare”. Roden simply placed a picture in our mind by saying “We have had another terrible week of it in the trenches.” These trenches were used as a protective barrier between their enemy and No-Mans Land. Not only did the trenches provide protection, it also brought many other deadly factors such as diseases, rodents, and unfit living conditions.
Walzak, Magen Mr. Gibson Honors English 11 17 May 2023 Funding for the Arts in Public Schools Time and time again, school has been associated with one of the most influential times that a person can go through in their life. Throughout their thirteen years in the school system, a child grows and recognizes who they are, and who they are to become. Beyond education, schools offer a variety of activities and programs to help kids expand their horizons and be who they want to be, whether this includes sports, music, STEM activities, and more. Recently, however, many schools have begun to cut programs to save money, including several different music programs.
These schools also spend six times as much money per athlete than for students. This is not fair to students that are paying to attend a certain university because they are not receiving the full value and benefits that school could offer. Although some people argue that sports bring in donations from boosters and increased applications, cutting just a fraction of the costs of sports would free up thousands of dollars that could be put back into scholarships for students, reducing student
Coupling this loss with an added expense of student athlete salaries leads to an increase in tuition for general students which isn’t fair. The president of IMG College, Ben Sutton, states that “revenue from college sports is our country’s single greatest source of college scholarships, next to the federal government.” These facts show that paying college athletes would hinder the education system as a whole. Not only would this cause a huge disruption in finances in schools, it would cause the federal government to have more issues with funding
Some say college sports wouldn’t exist without the athletes, so they should be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Although this may be true, the value of education will be affected. College athletes are in school to work hard to earn their degrees while chasing their
Sports motivate athletes to be better students, so funding sports would just keep kids inspired to do good at school, not cause them to get
Why Have Arts in Schools? President Barack Obama once said, “The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create.” In schools, one of the most overlooked and underfunded subjects are the arts. During the 1930s, art education was greatly supported in the U.S. However, as time progressed the focus of education shifted to more standardized tests, science, and math.
The answer is very clear in some cases, and it begins with entertainment. Our society puts so much time and effort into sports because of the revenue and entertainment provided. Today, it is acceptable to spend so much on high school sports, because all around the nation’s sports are at the core of our entertainment. By making a profit on selling sports to our community, the values of the school’s activities changes. The visual arts are not as broadcasted as sports, so they are not listed as important.
