Although college athletes bring in money for the school they attend, they should not be compensated by being paid. Athletes are already compensated by receiving a four year athletic scholarships which ranges $70,000 to to $200,000 over a period of 4 years. This is a large amount of money for one person to be given on a scholarship. Also with the scholarship their books, tuition, room and board are covered. Athletes getting paid will affect the value of their education and it’ll create problems: sports program and student body. Some say college sports wouldn’t exist without the athletes, so they should be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Although this may be true, the value of education will be affected. Football and basketball are the biggest sports programs in colleges across the states. It’s also the two main sports programs that generate money. So problems with other sports like soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, volleyball, track and field will arise. These sports work just as hard as football and basketball players but will still be paid differently. Problems with equal compensation for male and female athletes will also arise. It would get very complicated and figuring out who should get paid what will cause conflict amongst everyone.
There'll be conflict amongst the student body.The average person that goes to college happens to be a middle class citizen that still has to pay their way through college with little to no scholarships. It wouldn’t be fair to other students who don’t play a sport but work hard academically. The students who play sports would be looked up more highly than others. Students who help bring in money to the school like the theatrical production students would want to be paid also. Students don’t need to be divided on whether who gets compensated or
