In 1947, Indians chose the symbol of the Ashoka Chakra to represent their flag and their country. Their intentions were to honor a great ruler named Ashoka. 2,000 years ago, he ruled the Mauryan empire. His rule caused a boost in religion and established reforms. However, some believe that he was a ruthless conqueror and did not deserve to be known as an enlightened ruler. Ashoka caused the rise of the Mauryan empire, which was important in ancient India. In addition, he cared for the welfare of his people. This goes to prove that Ashoka was in fact an enlightened ruler.
