One of the reasons I want to become an Occupational Therapist Assistant is to help people who have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” People with Asperger’s syndrome are often misjudged because of their “disabilities.” Symptoms of Aspergers: There are several different symptoms that are shown when a person has Asperger’s Syndrome. Not all people with Asperger’s Syndrome have all of the symptoms, but they do have some.
A psychiatrist diagnoses Autism using criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 though observation of the child in an examining room and recording observations made by the parents. Clinicians may also ask parents and teachers to complete behavior checklists such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised after observing the child’s behavior at home and in the classroom (Hallahan, Kauffman, Pullen, 2015, pp. 216). Clinicians look for signs in social, communication and behavioral differences. Some social differences are that a child with Autism would have little or no eye contact and do not read social cues. They do not respond to a parent’s smile or other facial expressions and often have inappropriate facial expressions.
For the purpose of this paper, the child observed will be called “Red”. Red is a three-year-old male toddler with no reported history of serious illness. At his last exam, Red was found to be in the 95 percentile in weight and height amongst his peers. His mother reported that Red developed normally throughout infancy, although he struggled to eat solid foods. The mother also stated that Red had recently been admitted to a developmental school as the Arizona Behavioral Center had diagnosed him as a high functioning autistic child.
Figuring out life can be one of the most difficult things that one must accomplish. As many people are victims of complaining about their lives and how nothing ever seems to go their way, we become self-centered. There are people in the world like John Elder Robison who not only was trying to figure out life but was also trying to figure out why he never could accomplish what was considered “normal”. As the readers learn throughout the book all about John Elder’s life and how he conquered it while having an undiagnosed case of asperger’s.
In the novel, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, written by Mark Haddon, readers discern the correlation of events from the novel which display the protagonist’s behavior and illness. The protagonist, Christopher, is described to be suffering with a form of autism, Asperger’s syndrome. Asperger’s syndrome is not considered to be a diagnosis on its own, however, it’s part of a broader category called autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Bhandari, 2016). Throughout the novel, numerous events are depicted that prompts readers to grasp the normalities of Asperger’s syndrome, many of which dawn from the common symptoms.
This book report is written regarding the book Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s, by John Elder Robinson; published by Crown Publishers, New York. I chose this book due to the fact it’s about Asperger’s syndrome. When I first read a brief description of the syndrome, it was defined as a social inability to interact or connect, with other people properly. As a person who suffered from severe social anxiety for most of my life, I was very interested in learning more about this syndrome. In some way, I thought I could understand the author’s point of view.
Asperger’s Syndrome: Stages of Life Asperger’s has many names but only one meaning: “a severe developmental disorder characterized by major difficulties in social interaction, and restricted and unusual patterns of interest and behavior.” Asperger’s was first brought into light in the 1940’s by an Austrian pediatrician named Hans Asperger. Hans Asperger was best known for his studies on early child mental disorders. Hans Asperger conducted research on four boys that appeared to have autism.
The first indicator of Asperger’s Syndrome is an intense obsession with one or two things. Psych Central which ranks number 2 in mental health-focused websites declares, “ An obsession is a recurring thought of something or someone, where it always seems to be in a person’s mind. Obsessions may be a passing occurrence or a long-term interest, and may or may not be uncomfortable experiences”(1). George and Lennie sit down and start to communicate their American Dream. How they would buy a farm all on their own, tend to the land every day, and have some cows and pigs.
Characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome Asperger’s syndrome (AS) is a kind of the twice exceptional. It is a pervasive developmental disorder and it is characterized by impaired social interaction, restricted and stereotyped behaviours or interest, average or above average language and cognitive development (Gallagher & Gallagher, 2002). All children with AS will exhibit impairments in social interactions (Neihart, 2000; Webb, 2001; Gallagher & Gallagher, 2002; Lovecky, 2004). They have difficulties in interpersonal relationships, understanding others and making and keeping friends. They act differently in compare to their peers.

This is because Caleb demonstrates full criteria for Autism, but he began to show symptoms for Autism in kindergarten instead of preschool. Autism has early onset by age three. According to his mother, Caleb was highly interested in his peers in preschool, an attitude which seemed to slowly vanish once Kindergarten started. This means when Caleb was three he demonstrated typical social behaviors for his age group, but by age five he started to decline in social interaction.
Asperger’s is a mental disorder in the autism family. Most people with asperger’s have trouble reading nonverbal cues, reacting appropriately to social situations, and meeting new people. I was put into solo and group therapy from third until fifth grade. Now, it could be said that all of, or most of, Shaun's presenting symptoms lead to one critical diagnosis. A disorder that develops normally in one’s childhood years, like it did with Shaun. That disorder is known in the psychological community as Autism Spectrum Disorder. An individual with Autism usually expresses the universal characteristics of lacking in communication skills, being exceedingly non reactive with other human beings, and possessing concrete, ritualistic behaviors and/or interests (Comer, 2015). In addition, a child with Autism could have issues navigating areas that entwine around social skills, emotional skills and communication skills.
Autism is a brain development disorder characterized by continuous problems in social communication and interaction, besides with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities. ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder and can sometimes be referred to as Autistic Spectrum Disorder. As stated by the Medical News Today (2015), Autism Spectrum Disorder is a wide-spectrum disorder. This means that there will be no same people who will have the exact and same symptoms. And as well as experiencing altering combinations of symptoms, because some people will have mild symptoms while others will have severe ones.
