Culture. One of, if not the most, important aspects in creating diversity in a society. Differences in culture can be easily distinguished within a community. For example, one can effortlessly experience different cultures just by going to different food markets in the community. There are food markets that are “common” to the general public of the community while there are others that are specific to a certain cultural population within the community.
The United States of America is the most diverse country in the world today. You can travel to the mountainy southern states, or the flat midwest, and the two places are basically completely different countries with completely different cultures. This is a direct correlation from in Colonial America how the colonies were so different even though they were all English owned. Because the English colonies were all so diverse, this led to our present day nation to be such a “melting pot.” Although England had thirteen Colonies in America, the Colonies had substantial differences between them, like how they were formed for different reasons, the basis of their economies were different, and the role religion played in each colony varied.
Culture is an interesting concept. It is the traditions of a type of people as well as their arts, manners, and many other things. Our actions and attitude can make America the great country it one was, so that all of our diversity that makes up our country is accepted. Our country was based on “the melting pot.” Also our country was compared as “the heirs of all time.”
Diversity in the united state has been extended to a broader understanding of what diversity really means. Diversity first meaning is that positions should not be segregated by gender. For example a board of directors should have women on the board and there should be a male as the receptionists. Today in class we talked about America and if we cherish diversity. At first the majority of the class said “yes” including myself, but as we finished our debate most of us had gone from “yes” to “no.” Also, in the articles we read in class earlier last week, Patel states that even though Washington had slaves, MLK junior still looked up to him as a great leader, he also states that Washington wanted America to stand for something different. McGregor does not believe America cherishes diversity because she wanted Oscars and acting academy’s to be more equal… most academy awards were given to white males on top of not having even one female in the directing industry. I believe that America does not cherish diversity because sexism and racism
Cultural diversity flourishes in the United States even though the golden door are no longer as open as they once were. Americans’ doors have rusted shut through disuse. It doesn’t matter how many people come to the United States looking for freedom and opportunity there will always be groups of people who voluntarily discredit immigrants. Despite Emma Lazarus’s optimistic view, immigrants have and will almost always be looked upon with a predisposition of judgement and shame. With this they will most likely have a harder time reaching the freedom they aspired for.
As a member of the LGBT community, I see America through the eyes of someone who has had to struggle to gain acceptance from others and themselves. When you are gay or transgender not everyone is going to accept or understand you, but you have a chance to be who you are because in America you can build your own path. To me, Americans are like phoenixes; we can rise from the ashes of our pasts, and build ourselves up creating our own sense of liberty and freedom. I grew up in a traditional Christian household, so I was very sheltered as a child. When it came to anything the church thought was a sin, I was never told about it, so I didn’t know what being gay meant until I was 12 years old.

Diversity is a topic that is very sensitive to society today unfortunately there are people out there who take it to extremes. It’s the uniqueness of an individual who are different in their own way rather it is race, ethnicity, gender, beliefs, and social standing. However, people see others who are different as an alien basically in our society. America is made up of various ethnicities, race, etc basically we are a mixed breed or a mutt, Different cultures came to America to escape the wars and fights that were going on in their country. Our country represents freedom but instead of working together we are fighting each other for being different such as enslaving African Americans.
“The diversity in our speech reflects the diversity of U.S. culture (Wonderopolis).” In the American language, there are multiple names, phrases, and pronunciations throughout the country. It is only expected to have different ways from someone who lives across the country from another, but it is interesting when people speak the same language but do not have the same terms, sayings, and pronunciations. There are many different words that we could substitute, on a daily basis, and it would still mean the same thing. As an example of this, there is garbage can or trash can.
