Competency B
Competency B is defined as:

describe and compare organizational settings in which information professionals practice;

Introduction

There are many positions within any field that can be considered as an information professional. As librarians, we have even more numerous positions to consider as an information professional. Hirsh (2015) states, “Librarians have always been the gatekeepers of information, learning and knowledge creation… With the dawn of computers and digital content, libraries expanded access to include digital and multimedia content… The information professional, therefore, is no longer bound to the “library”– their expertise is needed in every school, organization, community center, home, and even on every mobile device” (Hirsh, p.4). As the world continues to evolve and expand, so does the world of the information professional. …show more content…

For this paper, we were supposed to pick any library setting, and describe the internal and external atmosphere. For this assignment, I chose my city’s public library. I described what was consisted within the public library. This included sections such as “fiction,” “children,” “young adult,” as well as consisting of a media center. As for the external, I described everything from the surrounding shops, to the percentage of how safe the city has been over the years.

This assignment has taught me a lot about the atmosphere of a public library. It has shown me what to look for in sections available to the public, as well as the standard equipment and resources that should be included. It has also encouraged me to look, investigate, and be knowledgable about the importance of checking one’s surroundings. Library surroundings are usually the safest and robust place any individual can be in.
