Assignment 4: United States Department of Labor Case Study
Describe the major features of this Website and how each feature can be used to monitor employee benefits. The United States Department of Labor which is also known as the DOL has an official website full of information that can help monitor employee benefits. The DOL was created back in 1913 and it is a regulatory agency that administers and regulates federal laws. A few laws that the DOL help regulate are the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. These are informative tools that can be used to find out different things. There are also frequency asked questions that are on the very top of the page to answer the most commonly asked questions. The website includes blog information, news, and trending topics. Under the trending topics there are bullets that include retirement plans, leave benefits, work hours, minimum wage, wages, workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, and regulations. All of these things are very beneficial to both the employers and employees. It helps keep everyone up to date on the latest laws and changes to anything that falls under the DOL. Each feature on the website can be used to monitor employee benefits. The DOL serves as a tool to keep everyone up to date on compliance and to make sure every law and rule is followed. Any benefit plan provided by an organization or company must be in compliance with the regulations. There are many different consequences if the company does not follow rules. Companies should want to be in compliance at all times to avoid all unnecessary consequences. Under the National Labor Relations Board there are a few different things listed including investigating and remedying unfair labor practices. I can research a few examples of employer and union rights and obligations. An employer can not threaten an employee’s job or benefits if they decided to join a union.
There are over 180 federal laws but under the DOL there are a few major laws that every employer and employee should know about.
Wages & Hours
The Fair Labor Standards Act requires employers to pay covered employees who aren’t exempt the federal minimum wage and overtime pay ½ times the regular pay rate. The hours of children under 16 are restricted and forbids anyone under the age of 18 to work in any dangerous working conditions. This are the most know law of wages and hours.
Workplace Safety & Health
The Occupational Safety and Health Act regulates the safety and health condition standards with work and in the workplace. The workplace or work zone must be free of serious hazards. The OSHA has the right to do safety inspections, workplace
