There are many techniques to promote reading fluency in children. These techniques can be used by teachers, parents, or tutors. These techniques are used for students to practice their reading. “Research indicates that readers become more fluent when they are given lots of opportunities to practice their reading- either independently or with guidance and assistance from a more accomplished reader” (Wright, 2001, pg. 13). Assisted Reading Practice is described as a “very simple, but effective intervention” (Wright, 2001, pg. 14). This technique entails a student reading aloud, while an accomplished reader follows along with the reading silently. Young students look up to older, more experienced individuals. If they are paired with accomplished readers, they will want to learn how to read more efficiently. As teachers are “encouraging students to read more outside of school” (Ambruster, Lehr, & Osborn, 2003, pg. 41), this technique can easily be shifted to parents for homework. It will involve all parties surrounding the student, and it allows him or her to see how important reading is. Listening Passage Preview is described as follows: “the student follows along silently as an accomplished reader reads a passage aloud. Then the student reads the passage aloud, receiving corrective feedback as needed” (Wright, 2001, pg. 15). This technique should also be conducted in a quiet environment with no distractions. The next step is to tell the student exactly what the process is going to be. The technique says that the accomplished reader should read a passage for about two minutes. Once finished with the passage, the student should read the same passage aloud. Having the accomplished reader beside him or her is beneficial because if they make an error, the helper can give him or her
