Guided Reading: Allows the teacher to help students in small groups. Teachers can differentiate instruction to meet individual needs of students. Specific techniques can help an advanced, average, or struggling reader. The strategies include reinforcing decoding and comprehension skills using books that are leveled in complexity.

Echo reading: The teacher will read a sentence from a book and students will repeat the sentence as the teacher points to the words. This improves students sight word vocabulary, fluency, concepts of prints, and high-frequency words that are difficult to sound out.

Predictions & Background Knowledge: Teachers can introduce new words they will encounter in the text, discuss experiences, and analyze the cover of the story. Teachers should ask students to make predictions and what may happen as the events in the story start unfolding based on illustrations or title. After reading, students can check to see if their predictions were correct.

Set a Purpose: Teachers should set clear goals for students before reading. They should understand why they are reading a piece of a text, predict, and ask probing questions. This helps anchor their attention.

Illustrations: After reading a story, students can draw how they felt, about a character, or their favorite scene. ELLs: Learning to read in their primary language is easier because it builds on the words and sound structures of the language they know best. However, kindergarteners are sponges and if they are taught to read in two languages simultaneously with differentiated instruction, they can learn.
