Part One: Dr. Shanahan suggests in the video one of the major issues with English learners is the they are “always” behind in reading comprehension and therefore presents a struggle for teachers. We have learned in our courses that this is true because ELL students need a lot of vocabulary development and teaching of comprehension strategies even if they have been mainstreamed after some bilingual instruction; are being pulled out for English as a Second Language or Sheltered English instruction; and/or have been assessed as English proficient but they still need additional help with language, reading, and reading. To address this issue Dr. Shanahan stated that one of the strategies that teachers are currently using is the Experience Text Relationship Method (ETR) which provides a framework for planning and conducting guided discussions with students’ background knowledge and linking new text ideas to this knowledge. …show more content…

Next the teacher ask several questions to guide students through the text, section by section, clarifying points that might be unclear to the students and lastly, she guides students to draw relationships between the text and their own experiences.
