Assisted Suicide Arguments Against Euthanasia

Assisted suicide or Euthanasia has been a controversy since even before Doctor Kevorkian was arrested in 1999 for assisting suicide to terminally ill patients. Since and before Kevorkian a number of countries have legalized euthanasia as well as 5 US states. The questions we face are will assisted suicide lead to a slippery slope, does it go against the oath “do no harm” and are patients really in the right state of mind to make the choice of assisted suicide?
A primary concern of some professionals is; “How far could euthanasia go?” “Taking the life in the name of compassion also invites a slippery slope toward ending the lives of people with nonterminal conditions.”What if this does not stop at the terminally ill and carries over to the …show more content…

Assisted suicide does not go against “do no harm” ,but also supports the principle“relieve suffering.” Opponents of euthanasia say“Even with the most advanced medical care we can still cure occasionally but comfort always. However, this is not always true. It is not always possible to meet the needs of all patient A common misconception formed by opponents is that a doctor has to put the drug in an IV for assisted suicide ,however this is untrue. When a patient chooses assisted suicide they must administer the drug themselves. The doctor is not doing any harm in the process of assisted suicide. If a person feels like assisted suicide is their only option are they really in the right state of my mind to make a life ending decision? “People who request death are vulnerable. They need care and protection. To offer them lethal drugs is a victory not for freedom but for the worst form of neglect.” People who feel that death is there only option need consoling and support.
