What is death? To some people, the question may seem bizarre, or downright terrifying. They may say that death is the end, that it is the epilogue of the story that is our life. Some people, however, beg to differ. They say that death is the key to unlock the chains of life. They say that death sets them free from their suffering. The people who fit into this category are people who are left to rot away in hospital beds in agony and unrelenting pain. Who are we to deny them the sweet relief of death? You are aware of what's going on around your body but you can't move or speak. You feel pain but you can't tell anyone about it. You are either in a coma or what is known as a persistent vegetative state. No matter what you call it, it is certainly a fate worse than death. This is because it is neither life nor death. When Theresa Marie Schiavo nee Schindler, age 26, had a cardiac arrest in her home at Petersburg, Florida, she was rushed to the hospital, only to be determined to be in a vegetative state. When her husband appealed to the court for her food tube to be removed, stating that: “…she would want to be allowed to die…” (Schiavo, kevinmd.com). After the court had decided that the food tube would be removed, Terri Schiavo’s parents went to court to put the food tube back in, and with the support of a hastily made law by President George W. Bush, the food tube was put back in. Although her parents had pushed for her tube to be put back in for the chance to see her again, Terri Schiavo never woke from her vegetative state and died 13 years into her comatose state. It is estimated that: “…$55,000 a month for a patient in a vegetative state, and approximately $60,000 for a patient with a terminal disease with life support…” (near-death.com). If we multiply the number 55,000 by 12, we get $660,000 for one year. This is not a luxury the working class has. This is only for a year as well.
