As a formal introduction to medicine, I was diagnosed and treated for chronic asthma at the age of four. My diagnosis led to frequent hospital visits and kept my parents on the verge of insanity as they lacked the understanding of my recurrent asthma attacks. My diagnosis led to both good and bad results, I was forever marked with being considered an asthmatic patient however; the respiratory defect has ultimately stimulated my interest in medicine. My experience with the community and as a leader during my undergraduate years serves for the advantage of IMPACT. I have served as regular volunteer of the Canton community revolving around inner city families, particularly homeless families promoting the importance of nutrition and the components of well-being and I have served as a mentor for three years teaching basic concepts of biological sciences. Much of my clinical experience was obtained through employment, observations, and hands on training which further expanded my understanding of clinical application beyond the textbook. My research experience comprised of hands-on and independent work, yielding applicable skill in critical, independent and analytical thinking. My intentions in fulfilling the role of being a research assistant for IMPACT are to further expand the knowledge of treatment, prevention and intervention for inner city pediatric patients with asthma across urban areas in efforts to improve the quality of life for generations to come and to bring an underlining understanding of the scare of asthma.
