AT&T provides a variety of services to include wireless communications, local exchange services, long-distance services, data/broadband and Internet services, video services, managed networking, wholesale services and directory advertising and publishing. It operates in several segments including wireless, wireline, and advertising solutions. In additional AT&T combines services, wireless and streaming under one umbrella and not counting against data.
The resource-based view (RBV) strategy analyzes a firm’s internal resources that may potentially be the key to achieving a competitive advantage. In order to sustain a competitive advantage, a firm must have unique resources (Barney, 2004). RBV strategy is used to evaluate the internal capabilities of an organization's resources and competencies (Barney, 2001). Resources are what the organization has, and capabilities are what the organization does. The critical resources that AT&T has at its disposal are a strong financial position, extensive network infrastructure, research and development facilities, brand image, a unique culture and intellectual property. All of these factors combined make AT&T a formidable opponent for continued international expansion.
