As far as pros and cons of having athletic programs in high schools go, pros far outpace cons. The cons are minimal but the pros are infinite. The article, Young, Gifted, and Homeless, demonstrates that one who starts out with nothing can far exceed the success of their peers with motivation in athletics ad academics. The strive in Athletics typically motivates the success in grades. Sports give a student a sense of belonging and accomplishment; in order to not loose that accomplishment they are inspired to keep their grades up to maintain a well rounded high school reputation. The students mentioned in Young Gifted, and Homeless advocated their mental capacity by learning that their only way out is through education and athletic motivation. The positive aspects of athletic programs include a better reputation for the school, more options for kids to be active, helping kids get into college, and the physiological aspects that sports influence. As previously mentioned, the sense of belonging in with a coach, teammates, and other trusted adults teaches students more than how to play a sport.
