The Life of Augustus
Augustus once said, “I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.” Augustus was a great leader of Rome. He found himself in the spotlight at a very young age, and eventually became known as one of the greatest Roman emperors (although technically he was not a Roman emperor) known to man. Augustus became one of the greatest Roman emperors because of his upbringing, the way he rose to power and what he did during his reign. The spirit of Rome was a crumbling pile of bricks, and through Augustus’s leadership, (Do i need a comma there) he built an impressive city that would stand the test of time.

Mark, from World History Encyclopedia, says, “ Octavian was adopted by his great-uncle Julius Caesar in 44 BCE, and then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar.” He was adopted by the great leader, Julius Caesar, who was his great uncle. Augustus was very involved with the military during his younger life, “In 46 BCE he accompanied Caesar, now dictator, in his triumphal procession after his victory in Africa over his opponents in the Civil War; and in the following year, in spite of ill health, he joined the dictator in Spain. He was at Apollonia (now in Albania) completing his academic and military studies when, in 44 BCE, he learned that Julius Caesar had been murdered” (Grant). With the help of Agrippa, he also lavished large sums on the adornment of Rome.” Augustus had a number of successful battles and campaigns, which helped him become one of the most recognizable leaders of the Roman Empire. Augustus also helped Rome form into what they called the golden age. According to Mark, from the World History Encyclopedia, “The era of Augustus' reign was a golden age in every respect. The peace which Augustus restored and kept (the Pax Romana) caused the economy, the arts and agriculture to flourish. An ambitious building program was initiated in which Augustus completed the plans made by Julius Caesar and then continued on with his own grand designs.” Augustus, when he ruled, made Rome into one of the most prominent countries in the world for their time. He made the buildings more impressive and the economy prospered under his reign.
