About The Author: My name is Helga Lotta Schubert, and I am from Krakow, Germany. I am 34 years old, and I am a writer for the Handelsblatt Newspaper. I am not Jewish, but feel that what was done to the Jews is wrong.

The sound of happiness and celebration filled the camps of Auschwitz yesterday, January 27, 1945. The prisoners were officially liberated and the Nazis have been defeated. The Soviet troops came in and saved an incredible amount of people's lives. Celebrations are happening all over Germany, but many Jews are also grieving. So many loved ones have been lost. He said, “The train arrived in the middle of the night, so we were greeted by very bright lights shining down on us. We were greeted by soldiers, as well as women. When the Jews first arrived, their fate was decided. They would die right away or they would suffer through living in Auschwitz. There was a right side and a left side. One side meant you would die, and the other meant you would live and work. The one’s whose lives were not taken right away were taken to the prison barracks. There is about 300 of them there. The Jews that were not so lucky, were headed to the “bathhouses”. Prisoners were gassed there, but no one knew it until they got there. All they thought was that they were getting cleaned off.
