Other therapies Other kinds of therapies out there today are musical, physical, speech, and occupational. Doctors use all of these to help children with autism as well as the other treatments mentioned before. Speech specifically is one of the most beneficial to children with autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2018). Because of the communicational issues children with autism sometimes face speech therapy helps immensely with helping them learn how to speak and have conversations with others. Not only do these children usually receive therapies some even see psychologists to help with their symptoms (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2018). Because children with autism can have problems with anger it helps to have an outlet like a psychiatrist to help …show more content…
Project TEACCH, an intervention program that involves specific ways to help with behavioral and cognitive learning (Harrison Elder, 2002). The more the children learn the easier it will seem to them to take part in certain situations. Another program used is the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This programs helps children with autism communicate while learning communication. Not only does it help with communication but it also helps decrease angry behaviors. Jennifer Harrison Elder, a professor at the University of Florida, states, “Children using this system have available to them a repertoire of lifelike pictures of everyday objects and activities. Through consistent implementation, including instruction, repetition, and positive reinforcement, children can learn to exchange cards for desired objects or activities.” (Harrison Elder, 2002). The programs use real life pictures or life like pictures to help with the therapy. By using real life pictures and examples, it teaches the children truthful and actual situations to help them deal with them in the future. Another program used to help children with autism, Greenspan’s Developmental Approach, uses play models to help children’s mental states. The approach works as a learning play session. The whole focus of this approach leans on interactions between children with autism and others people. (Harrison Elder, 2002). The reasoning …show more content…
Yes, they understand what autism does, but not much more than that. Now scientists are collecting brains to study to find more information about autism (A Priceless Resource, 2011). Some scientists have said no solid evidence can prove that ASD has links to issues like mitochondrial dysfunction (Dager, 2012). Mitochondrial dysfunction happens when the mitochondria, an organelle in the cell, stop working correctly (Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2018). Another name for the mitochondria is powerhouse because it creates energy for the
