Edward hopper is a renowned American artist popularly known for his oil paintings that focused mainly on his own reflections of the modern American life. He is famously known as the ‘silent painter’ due to his incessant tendencies to frame his works in such a manner that places the burden of deciphering its meaning completely on the viewer’s perspective. Most of his paintings do not tell a story but rather remain open and can be interpreted in a number of ways by people observing them. The artist uses shadows and light to create a powerful visual imagery. The darkness underneath the table and at the corner of the room brings forth the overwhelming feeling of sadness evoked by the lady. On the other hand, the coffee cup and saucer are painted in very white colors in an effort to draw the viewers’ attention closer to the woman and separate them from the many shadowy distractions within the room. Furthermore, although the viewer knows utterly nothing about the woman in the painting or her background, the artist draws them to relevant clues that might enable them to infer about what she is going through. Through the marque use of shadows and light, the viewer is again drawn to closer to the lady. Her skin is painted in bright color making her legs and face ostensible and capturing the complete focus of viewers. A closer look at her face and we can see that she is very meditative, her eyes downcast and seemingly melancholic.
