The Aztec Society.By: Sarah Hofer
The Aztecs were a group of people who today are known as Mexica. They started in 1427 and were overthrown in 1521.They began as an alliance of three city-states: Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan. Their religion was Aztec polytheistic. They called themselves as the “People of the Sun”. They built a great city named Tenochtitlan, which today is known as Mexico City. They settled on an island inside of lake Texcoco after over 150 years of traveling after one of their gods Huitzilopochtli told them to travel south until they saw an eagle perching on a cactus with a snake in its mouth.

They were disciplined, independent, and resourceful people known as traders and warriors. They formed trading and defensive allies with the people around them. They were kind of feared by the tribes that were not allied with them. The Aztecs were a large group of people and they had quite a few allies with them. The Aztecs took advantage of the resources at their disposal. They were excellent farmers and them terraced fields and built chinampas or floating islands too grow their food upon because it was so wet and marshy there. Tenochtitlan is a great outside market that the Aztec constructed and traded at. It served as a daily need system with everything from cotton cloaks and cocoa beans. It worked on a trading system. once Tenochtitlan had been established it began to create a great empire through war. The Profits from war were things like the collection of tribute like gifts and taxes from conquered groups. It created a unified sense of purpose, like the good of the people, and strong culture contributed to expansion. The Aztec now had a superpower with the market Tenochtitlan on their
