Bad Decisions In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

887 Words4 Pages

Teens often make bad decisions or don't fully think through their choices, because their frontal lobes are partially connected. Romeo and Juliet lived in a different time where many resources and things we have today were not available, so much so that they did have they acted on and hung onto. Romeo and Juliet had a deep love, but it happened so fast, most likely because of their teen minds. They didn’t think through their actions and it led them to death. The brain science behind how Romeo and Juliet think about consequences are the frontal lobe, limbic system, and myelination and synaptic pruning.

The Frontal Lobe of a teen's brain is only partially attached, so they can’t use it fully. “It’s part of the brain that says: ‘Is this a good …show more content…

When your brain is in the process of developing different parts develop at different speeds. The limbic system, develops the fastest, particularly faster than the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is part of your brain that thinks ahead, it uses logic. Because the prefrontal cortex develops later, the teen brain doesn’t use as much logic when making decisions and instead uses feelings. Romeo and Juliet use the Limbic System heavily, especially because of their newfound love. It helps explain the decisions and actions that they choose. “They are more likely to experiment on the spur of the moment…”(Professor Laurence). Romeo and Juliet's help gives this quote justice as they get married soon after they have just met. “Go ask his name.-If he be married, My grave is like to be my wedding”(Juliet, 134-135). There are such new thoughts and excitement in their brain, that make them vulnerable to impulsion. Their love and feeling lead them to death. Romeo and Juliet were living in the “spur of the moment”(Professor Laurence) and when you are overtaken by the limbic system you use your feelings which can lead to misses communication often times it's good to practice other activities to help you overcome …show more content…

Myelination, “This boosts the brain’s efficiency by increasing the speed with which a signal travels down the axon by 100 times' (Teens and Decision Making: Fine-tuning the brain). When making a decision your mind actually thinks of everything you need to do extremely fast. Sometimes too fast. Romeo and Juliet acted too quickly, they decided to get married quickly. The undeveloped minds of a teen affect how Myelination works and make teens more impulsive and vulnerable to harmful substances. The way Romeo and Juliet grabbed onto their love is an effect of this. Their minds are excited, and though not drugs or harmful substances, their grabbing onto their love costs their death. “In synaptic pruning, synapses not used very often are removed, allowing the brain to redirect precious resources toward active synapses” (Teens and Decision Making: Fine-tuning the brain). Synaptic Pruning is a process of taking out old and not used synapses, because of underdeveloped activities and thoughts, it takes out things that teens need and should be able to rely on. This also affects the impulsion of teens, and when their excited minds find something addictive like drugs it's harder to let go of because they are getting rid of the other less strong and exciting thoughts. Romeo and Juliet held on to the idea of marriage and death seemed like the best option because of
