Many writers seem to write just to write, but isn’t there a meaning in all writing. Rather to persuade, to teach, or to argue a topic. There is no such writing that is just writing. Most writing is to make the reader feel connected and to be a part of the story. Writers want the reader to feel connected to the story because if there no connection then there is no story.
“For weeks I read, speed read, books by modern educational theorists, only to find infrequent and slight mention of students like me. Then one day leafing through Richard Hoggart’s The Uses of Literacy, I found, in his description of the scholarship boy, myself.” (Rodriguez 17) 5. What is the intended audience for this piece? With that in mind, what is the writer’s purpose?
Authors demonstrate purpose in their writing with tone/mood, person vs person conflict, and person vs society conflict. To begin with, authors use tone
Question 1 Why we write? Writing is a basic way to express your feelings, thoughts, opinion, and learning. A primary way to evaluate a person’s learning and intellect in college, the workplace, or even in the community is how the person writes about different things and shares his or her aspects. Writing helps in training a person’s communication and critical thinking skills. It helps in identifying someone’s personality and also makes an individual’s thinking and knowledge noticeable and long-lasting.
As writers produce more pieces of literature, they develop their own strategies to appeal to certain audiences. These strategies vary, such as how the author feels about a topic. Their passion for various topics typically influences the reader through their use of diction. Based on their audience, some authors choose to write logically while others may choose to write more passion-driven pieces. These passionate pieces usually lead to more creative uses with things like unique punctuation placement, while logical writing leads to the use of more statistics, facts, and longer paragraphs.
He discussed Douglas Park’s definition of audience that includes those who hear or read a discourse, those who are a part of an external rhetorical situation, those who the writer thinks of, and the audience suggested by the discourse. Grant-Davie says that reading and writing can be a negotiation between the readers and writers. Constraints as factors in a situation that can affect the achievement of the rhetorical objectives. Grant-Davie defined constraints as all factors in a situation aside from the rhetor and audience that can lead the audience to consider the discourse differently and influence the rhetors response. He also said that a rhetorical situation ends when the discourse has been
Author’s Purpose: Dedication “The speed of your success is limited only by your dedication and what you’re willing to sacrifice.” This is a quote by Nathan W. Morris explaining his personal beliefs about what success is made of. The key term to this is dedication as well as hard work. This being said, the common author’s purpose found in all of the pieces of nonfiction literature we studied in this unit is dedication.
The Reason for Writing Many authors have a specific reason for devoting their time to writing. It is clear throughout literature that writers use language to inform citizens of social injustices from the past. Most pieces of work are written for this purpose, such as news article and nonfiction books.
Rhetoric is defined as the art of persuasion using oral or written communications (Rapp). There are many theories and ideas which an orator or writer can use as tools to achieve their goal of persuading an audience. The audience is defined in rhetoric as “the listeners or spectators at a speech or performance, or the intended readership for a piece of writing or an assembled and pointed group of listeners that receive the message of the rhetor and ultimately decide the message’s effectiveness” (Enos). Within the study of rhetoric the focus is on what the speaker or writer does to create the affect and response they want from their audience; in this essay I will describe the audience and their role in the communications throughout
Audience as an Influencer When writing any type of composition, is the author consciously aware of who their audience will be? Benjamin Franklin started writing an autobiography of his life when he was about sixty-five years old. This self-narrative was written about Franklin’s life goals and accomplishments. The subject of who Franklin’s intended audience comes into question throughout the self-narrative.
Communication can be split into different categories, namely • Verbal communication • Non- verbal communication • Written communication Effective communication involves minimising potential misunderstanding and overcome any barriers in the communication process. We make use of multiple communication channels , for example face to face conversations, telephone calls, text messages, emails, brochures etc. Choosing an appropriate communication channel is vital for effective communication, as each channel has different strengths and weaknesses. Written communication is always useful as a way of recording what has been said.
The above definitions subtly bring us closer to the importance of creative writing as it denotes human experiences throughout the ages, enabling us to cross geographical and cultural barriers. It illustrates what is common and shared among different peoples and cultures. It also enriches our human conscience by encouraging feelings of empathy and kindness. In short, I strongly believe creative writing is the essence of being human. In addition, creative writing has long been a form of refined entertainment and fun, for both writers and readers.
