The bald eagle is the national symbol of the United States and was on the endangered list due to eggshell thinning which was caused by DDT. “DDE and its parent pesticide DDT were used to control mosquitoes and other insects. The chemical was linked to egg shell thinning in bald eagles. It was banned in 1972” (Murray). In 1995 the bald eagle was moved to the threatened species list and was removed from the list in 2007.

In the 1900s the Environmental Protection Agency listed the bald eagle as an endangered species. Kate Chopin’s novel, The Awakening opens with a scene of two birds, emphasizing that the motif of birds later within the novel will play an important part with setting the constant metaphor they bring. Throughout the whole novel the motif of birds is a metaphor for the Victorian women during that period -- caged birds serve as reminders of Edna’s entrapment and the entrapment of Victorian women in general. Edna makes many attempts to escape her cage (husband, children, and society), but her efforts only take her into other cages, such as the pigeon house. Edna views this new home as a sign of her independence, but the pigeon house represents her inability to remove herself from her former life, due to the move being just “two steps away” (122).

One of the two educational goals outlined in the Melbourne Declaration (2008) is that “All young Australians are to become... Active and informed citizens.” With this in mind, this unit of work is designed to foster student’s learning in the concept of introduced species. It will open students’ minds to some of the ideas and controversy surrounding introduced species today; what are some of the dangers, what went wrong in the past, how are we still feeling the effects now, how something in one country won’t necessarily work in another. The key outcome that this unit is based around is GE2-2 and it fits into the Stage Two curriculum under the content ‘The Earth’s Environment’.
