The story implies that top management is the one who can create or destroy a company’s culture. The reason they have so many influences over the company’s culture is because they create the rules and enforce them.

16-24- Denise Brown, a former member of the Tribune’s management, said, “If I spoke up, you were portrayed as a sissy.” How would you have reacted if you witnessed some these behaviors?

16-26- Why do you think Band of America’s and MBNA’s cultures appeared to mesh rather than clash?

Bank of America was able to know which MBNA’s practices should be kept and which should be changed. Bank of America showed their appreciation and respect for the culture of the company so they compared their practices allowing them to co-adapt. If Bank of America came in and changed everything it would be a disaster because the employees of MBNA’s was not accustomed to it and they would have left. It could have been a recipe for disaster for Bank of America. Instead, they were understanding and able to do what they thought was best for both companies.

16-27- Do you think culture is important to the success of a merger/acquisition? Why or why not?

I do believe culture is important to the success of a merger/acquisition. The stronger the culture in the company the more clear the company’s values and beliefs are shown. The company knows who they are and where they are going while a company with a weak culture has no direction or clear goals. I believe the smooth transition came from both companies glossing over the real differences to make the merger work. If Bank of America came in as a dictator and changed everything without knowing how the company operates or functions would have been detrimental to the company. Both company’s compared thousands of practices to insure the success of the acquisition.

15. Did Toyota’s Culture Cause Its Problems?

16-29- If Toyota is not the cause of unintended acceleration, why was it blamed for it?

Toyota was blamed for the unintended acceleration because society always needs someone to blame when something bad happens. Since there was no evidence or investigation into what happened to the cars people automatically blamed Toyota since they are the ones producing the cars.

16-30- Is it possible to have a strong-even arrogant- culture and still produce safe and high-quality vehicles?

I don’t think it is possible for an arrogant culture to produce safe and high-quality vehicles. They wont admit to their mistakes and believe the way they do things is right when it’s not. This could be dangerous because they are putting the lives of many people in danger. When they finally realize their mistakes it will be too
