The banking concept of education is a term used by Firere to explain the education system. He states that the education system teaches “students to memorize mechanically the narrated account. Worse yet, it turns them into "containers," into "receptacles" to be "filled" by the teachers”. As a whole he states that the education system needs to be changed. His concept still applies to the education system today, even though it was written decades prior. The Banking Concept of Education accurately describes public high schools and how the standardized tests and state requirement have changed the teaching styles. These contemporary teaching styles have forced students to memorize and regurgitate information.

Teachers do not like the standardized tests because they discern that tests do not accurately test a student’s intelligence (Siwiec, Kayla). “In theory, teachers and administrators can use standardized testing to make decisions regarding their instructional program and adjust teaching strategies accordingly” (Siwiec, Kayla). The education system has created a colossal impact on students' learning. It has changed the course of learning and shifted from critical thinking and analyzing of subjects to memorize and the regurgitation of information. Standardized tests do not allow for the curriculum to be fully taught because the students are not given time to go in depth with the information. Therefore, students are not gaining the largest amount of knowledge possible. The students are being taught to memorize information instead of learning the material and how they can critically analyze the information and apply it to everyday life. These standardized tests are not the most correct reasoning that can ultimately measure a student’s intelligence or college readiness (Darden, Tyler). A student’s college readiness can be measured by many things, but a standardized test may tell if the student has a foundation that could help the student succeed in college but it cannot tell if the student can succeed in a college class. This has led to a good standing for the school in the community but has brought concerns along with it. Ms. Siewic, a teacher at Powhatan high school states that “Schools systems and administrators all over the country focus on having the highest graduation rates, passing rate, test scores, etc.” (Siewic, Kayla). This could have huge percussions on a student life after high school, whether it be in the work force or college. She fears that the education system does not do a good job of “preparing and teaching student the skills necessary to be successful after they leave us.” (Siewic, Kayla); this can be a major concern when it comes to preparing students for college or to go straight into the work force. The education system has recently adopted a program all over the nation that is called “No Child Left Behind”, this program forces school systems to move students along who should have been held back. Tyler Darden, a professor at VCU, believes that the education system has sacrificed critical thinking and creative education methods for traditional, standardized methods of learning. As a professor at a university he has seen first hand what a standardized primary and secondary school education has done to suppress creativity and stunt students who cannot learn with traditional teaching methods.
