A Formal Analysis of The Virgin and Child
The sculpture Virgin and Child represents a mother and child. Some people believe that it is supposed to represent Mary and Jesus (Christianity). The artist is unknown but the artist that created The Virgin and Child uses concepts of Andre Beauneveu. Beauneveu uses styles of Gothic Art and naturalistic. Today many people know him his humanist and life like sculpture approach. Before making a sculpture he would study the face and body to make it as realistic as possible. The artist that created The Virgin and Child, also used some of these aspects in this sculpture. He made most of his sculptures while serving King Charles V and John Duke of Berry “In the art work his influence was abundant and widespread” (Cleveland Art). This artwork was believed to be made between 1385-1390. This era was known as the Late Medieval Period. It was made in France, Loire Valley. The Virgin and Child is Mary and Jesus, since it was made for churches and abbey’s. The mother figure’s expression shows nurturing and caring towards the child. Sections in the sculpture that are dominant are their eyes and hair. The colors from the limestone are mostly neutral except the eyes which were a rich green color. Since, the eyes were colored they show emphasis. In this sculpture the eyes represent light, love and the truth. The mother is also holding something in her hand, unfortunately; it broke, but it also was emphasized because it was also a deep rich green color. The mother’s and child’s hair is a light brown almost realistic. The virgin’s hair is light brown and wavy, which might be used to represent femininity. The child’s hair is also light brown, but it is stiff. This may show that the child still has time to grow and
