Part one of the story starts with the early life of Carols Blousan. Carlos was born in Binalonan, Philippines. His family was very poor and they were one of the many that worked hard but did not benefit only the rich landlords did. His dad is a farmers and owns their land and his mother works at the market. When his older brother Leon is back from the war, he fells in love with girl who already lost her virginity. The punishment to this was to take her back and when he did he got bitten for it. After Carlos father stopped their attack Leon left with his wife to start a new life. Food and sunshine was not given to the bottom level and the separation and the behavior of the upper class let Carlos know that American would not be easy and that he will be discriminated against. Once they reached Seattle Carlos and some other men rented a hotel room in chinatown. Instead of living the new life they were sold each for five dollars to work on the fish canneries because they did not have any money to pay the hotel. Being the race he was was hard during that time because after he comes back to Seattle he can only rent a place in chinatown or places with high crime rates. Carlos decided to move to California because when he was employed as an apple picker he was attacked by white people who killed his employers daughter. After he got to California he tried looking for jobs but he couldn't find any and like Seattle the Fillipino were living in crime resulted areas because no body else would give them place to rent. When he was in San Francisco he saw many terrible thing happen to Filipinos and decided that it was a crime to be one during that time due to the hatred and the abuse they were suffering from other races. All they wanted to do was educate themselves and improve but they were not given the opportunity to do that. One day he saw a man with a lot off money which led him to seeing his brother Amado. Amado did not believe that he was even his brother because he has forgotten a lot about his family and was not convinced until Carlos said their mothers name. He did not stay for long with his brother and left for LA. It was the same story as before, the only place he could rent was a crime filled areas and he could not find any jobs. He resorted to robbing an old Japanese man with a bad friend of his. During a chaos when one Filipino was shot he happened to see his brother Macario who took him back
