I began participating in band in 5th grade and throughout the years I have discovered that music is something that I truly enjoy. I originally decided to continue on with band during high school just for fun, unaware on how much of an impact it would have on my life. Through band, I have met some of my best friends and I have experienced once in a lifetime opportunities like performing at Walt Disney World, during a parade. Over the past four years I have drastically improved my musical ability and my leadership skills. Most importantly I have learned the value of a job well done.
I can now play notes higher than I ever could before the musical, leaving me with a hunger for more challenging music. I taught myself to play at fast tempos with little time to think about what I am playing. The latter musical lesson can be applied to life as well. Performing in the musical helped me learn to make decisions quickly. It was stressful at first, but with plenty of practice and not backing down, I was able to achieve my goal and be a part of a great show.
One article says that being in a band elective is very good for learning about competitiveness, whether that competition is in marching band where they are competing against other schools, or if it’s a solo audition (Krache). This helps students prepare for the future where they have to compete for something like a job, a raise, etc. Another way that they are beneficial for students’ futures is that students create tight bonds with their peers and learn how to be serious about something but also have fun while doing it (Krache). This helps students in the future when they need to be able to get along with their co-workers while also being professional. Finally, music electives help students prepare for the future because it helps them learn about how important it is to follow through with their commitments (Krache).
Band and Choir can be related to the arts. Using your imagination and hearing the chords can create a picture in your head. Students will learn teamwork, you need to be able to listen around you for other students so you can blend to make one voice or one tone. Students will have a better knowledge of self-confidence.

I've been playing piano since 3rd grade and alto saxophone since 5th. I wasn't sure about being in band when I was younger because I thought that it would take too much of my study time and I just wasn't ready. I joined the following year and I worked hard to start from Beginner Band and now I’m in Symphonic Band 1. Band has taught me a lot of things like teamwork, how to responsible for my instrument, it helped me to learn how to manage my time and really showed me what it meant to be part of a team.
The band community has had a positive impact on my high school experience. Band has been one of the things I was always excited about. It is a great community that is willing to work even when things get difficult. No matter what, we would get each other through the work to succeed at performances. Music education provides personal benefits to students that enrich their lives. In an ensemble, every member is equally important, from the first chair to the last chair. Thus every person must be able to play all of their music and be ready for anything. When one person does not practice their music and comes to rehearsal unprepared, it reflects upon the whole ensemble.
I have learned how to read musical pieces, how to play different piano-like instruments, and how to better organize my thoughts and critical thinking. I am a sophomore in high school and have been for a while now. That makes the experience of me being in band a time period of one to two years. Band has changed me for the better, whether it be me learning how to navigate myself through life or music, it has been there for me for a long time now. Without band and music, I do not know who I would be.
