Ben and Jerry’s Homemade Holdings Inc. was founded in 1978 by two school friends: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. The two friends did not have the best of luck in college and led them to take a course on how to make ice cream in 1977 at Pennsylvania State University. In 1978 with an initial investment of $12,000, they opened a small ice cream parlor in what used to be a gas station in Burlington, Vermont (About Ben & Jerry's). When their popularity later grew, they started to pack their ice cream in pints and later franchises started opening up in different towns across the state of Vermont. Not in Our Ice Cream” cause in 1989 came out against recombinant bovine growth hormone as it had a large impact on family farming. The “Take a Stand for Children Cause” in 1992 was when they joined in a campaign to help children have the basic needs.
