Best Buy Objectives

The goal in doing this project was to better understand the stock market. I did this by achieving 3 smaller objectives. The first was to follow stock values from NASDAQ (Best Buy Inc.) and NYSE (Brookdale Senior Living). In the beginning this was actually very frustrating because I had no idea how to even navigate the web pages. As I continued over the weeks I became familiar with the scene and vocabulary. Now I am able to easily track any stock progress and calculate my gain/loss without wanting to toss my computer across the room! Another objective achieved was to track the major indices, for this project specifically, it was the NASDAQ composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Recovery came quickly. By November 6 the stock had made its way back up to $35.41, though still totaling a $1.50 value loss. Reflecting back on the five week trend of NASDAQ we see a $260.43 value increase. Well, it turns out that Best Buy is actually on the Dow Jones Index (which also increased over the five weeks). I realized my mistake upon completing my due diligence. Regardless, Best Buy’s stock is likely decreasing because of the rise of smartphones. It was announced on November 2 that there would be a new CFO and COO of the company. This announcement was likely responsible for the 2.31 increase from the October 30th close to the November 6th close. Stock analysts estimate that the stock value will also decrease over the next two years. I estimate that eventually Brookdale’s stock will begin to rise because at some point all those of the ‘Baby Boomers’ generation will likely be living there (being the largest senior living company). This means an increased number of people are going to be relying on the services of senior living, so how could their stock not benefit from
