Why is it that some fail miserably while others achieve astonishing amounts of success? It is simply that some people are luckier than others or is that success is a direct representation of one’s hard work? Success is a matter of timing, however what one does with their fortunate timing determines their true success. Known as one of the most successful people in the world, Bill Gates is a direct representation of this. At Bill Gate’s school growing up, there was a new computer lab installed, which was very rare. This Bill Gates allowed him to develop a cutting-edge knowledge of computers. However, instead of not utilizing this opportunity, Gates claimed that “it was my obsession, it would be a rare week that we would not get twenty or thirty hours in.” (51-52) Bill Gates’s good timing did not guarantee him success, he had to also work hard. For example, Canada's cutoff for age-class hockey is in January. This causes the most successful hockey players to be born around the months of January, February, and March, because those children get another year to grow, allowing them to appear bigger and stronger to the coaches. Thus, when the coaches pick children for the advanced teams, they pick the bigger children that have had an extra year to grow. These better teams give the children more practice time with better coaches, ultimately making that child better at hockey. However, if the child simply did not practice hockey in any respect, than they would not be not be chosen for that team. It is simpler for those children that are born in January to be more successful, however there is still dedication needed in order for that child to be decent at any sport. Thus, the children born in the earlier months of the year are presented with favorable timing, however if they were to never work hard, than their good timing would be
