My academic goals after I graduated from UC Irvine is to achieve a higher education beyond a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Sciences. I have set going to dental school as a primary goal after graduating. My goal is to eventually obtain a D.D.S (Doctor of Dentist Surgery) degree. Working towards a specialty is an interest that I am very curious in pursuing; however, as of now becoming a general dentist is my main goal. I regard the STEM Academy as an extremely positive program that will significantly help my peers and myself in the future. Science has many stimulating topics that have helped our world to advance. The STEM program will definitely push me towards the science aspects of life, allowing me to become more educated in the subject. I hope to be able to join the STEM academy to gain more knowledge in the fields of science and math, to be able to collaborate with others more efficiently, work independently, and to be triumphant in being the best student I can. I want to achieve beyond what is expected in an average student and expand on all my skills.
I am applying for honors biology for many reasons. I believe that it would help to boost my academic experience, would help me out overall, and I love hands on projects. In high school I am really trying to challenge myself with my academics and social skills, so I thought that applying for biology would be a perfect fit. For example, I believe that honors biology would really help me work on my time management skills and since the class has a lot more expectations it would also help me hold myself more accountable. I also think that joining an honors science class in the first year will help me throughout the rest of the time I spend at CHS, in both future science classes and even others.
Unfortunately, my lackluster performance my first-year results in Florida State University’s adjusted overall GPA of 2.883, just shy of your desired 3.0. I expect that 2.883 will be bumped yet higher after I complete my inaugural semester at FSU; at midterms I currently have 4 A’s and 2 B’s. This semester I have focused on taking many Sociology courses and an Environmental Science Lab which provide much insight into society and engaging with people on local levels and how to complete a line transect (even if it is virtual), skills that are crucial to success of the projects at the NSF REU site. I am interested in furthering my education because of my deep fascination in biology and how it affects our future. Ever since the first science class I took in 7th grade I knew that the topic would be incorporated in my post-secondary education in some fashion. My freshman year of high school was difficult for me to adjust to and I did not perform to the best of my ability on my biology honors midterm. Due to this discrepancy, I was unable to be accepted into the Science Honor Society in junior year. Although disappointed that a singular grade had the ability to decide a part of my future two years later, I continued to work hard, especially in my science courses. Junior year, I decided to challenge myself and take an AP Physics course, even though I had never taken a physics course prior. This class was excruciatingly demanding and a new experience for someone who had never taken an AP class before.

I am studying a Psychology degree and this field I have chosen really interests me because I have a passion for helping people. Generally, I am that type of person to put other's happiness and well-being before my own, because it makes me feel like I have a sense of purpose. Also, since I was a little girl I have always been so fascinated with the way people interact, behave, think and feel. I always asked 'why?' and I still do to this very day.
Lesaux and Harris (2003) examined several researches that focused on English language learners (ELLs) with reading difficulties. At least 80% of teacher referrals for special education are for students that have trouble in reading, which is a huge issue regarding ELL students (Snow et al., 1998, p.40). This is because teacher’s indecisiveness to distinguish younger ELL students who are in danger of reading difficulties, despite proof of risk factors that were determined by using measures for early literacy detection. For instance, ELLs who exhibited shortcoming in sound recognition and structure are unlikely to be associated for being at risk for LD. It is only afterwards when student fail to meet academic expectations are they referred to additional services and special educational services.
Semester Reflection Throughout the semester in AP Biology I’ve been able to cover several different topics. These include being able to identify biological processes that require energy, investigating and modeling ways organisms capture and store free energy for use in biological processes and investigating and explaining how organisms respond to changes in their environment. Over the semester I have been able to gain a full understanding and can demonstrate proficiency in each of these components of the curriculum. The work that I have completed involving these topics shows this.
As a dreamer and queer woman of color, pursuing a career in STEM has been quite challenging. But I have never let anything get in the way of reaching my goals and dreams. I have swam against the current in order to be where I am today, where I have dreamt of being. I am currently a second year student at Trinity Washington University majoring in biochemistry and minoring in mathematics. I always found amazing the capabilities of living beings and mechanisms that allow life, development and evolution of organisms. Particularly interesting were my first approaches to microbiology in early classes in high school. My fascination by biological sciences was such that it led me to win the National Biology Contest held in Cuba, my native country in 2004.
