The Board of Directors healthcare organization first and foremost has a fiduciary obligation to the community in a not for profit setting, the board needs to cognizant if its role and the 5 major responsibilities are noted below. • making strategic decisions for the hospital • hiring and monitoring an effective CEO • ensuring the hospital is providing quality care • overseeing the hospital’s financial well-being • staying educated in healthcare industry news and best practices • being a representative of the hospital in the community. These 5 responsibilities should be a guideline for the institution and more importantly encompass all the functions of the board. When dealing with the hospital’s staff, the board should concentrate on the chief executive officer (CEO). He acts as the conduit to all the departments in the hospital including the chief operating officer, chief nursing officer, the chief financial officer, and the chief medical officer. In the last several years more, attention has been placed on hospital acquired condition and deaths, Statistics have shown that are approximately 100,00 avoidable deaths per year in the hospital setting. The board through it subcommittees must establish a quality and safety committee. This committee has several functions and areas that it need to review to ensure the safety and the quality of care administered in a healthcare organization. The committee also has the responsibility of draft and implement through the administration quality measures and processes. The committee should also use benchmarking to ensure that the institution is consistent with other institutions. The quality committee should also have dashboards and scorecard presented to them to follow many areas that they are
