Bob Marley's smooth style gives one a sense of freedom when they listen to his music and this freedom is emphasized and powered by the methodical sound and the messages that he uses in his song writing. Marley's music was a product of his culture, beliefs, and his experiences in life. These songs are inspiring as it relates to the social injustices during the early years when the whites dominated the world. Past issues are now today's issues which causes his songs to still have relevance. All of this holds true with a popular song written by him entitled “War”. Marley analyzes the society around him through his songs’ lyrics. He is protesting war and treatment of minorities worldwide through parallelism and pathos in order to illustrate the worlds problems and provide a remedy. First and foremost, Marley uses a heavy dose of repetition in phrases such as “War until…” and words such as “race” and “war”. He uses those phrases to suggest that sometimes human rights have to be achieved through protest, conflicts and war. War is associated with human rights when the song comments the struggle for human rights for people of Jamaica. Marley focuses on the fight for equality in a society dominated by poverty. An example of this is in his third verse when the mentioned slavery in saying “sub-human bondage”. Marley is assuming that his audience has emotional ties to slavery. This reference is effective because if his other strategies such as parallelism did not affect his audience he knows that this will. Marley’s constant use of the word “war” could also be considered pathos. The constant use of this word gets the audience riled up and makes them want to fight for justice.
