the novel Susan writes about a young 16-year-old girl named Miranda. Miranda and
her family live a normal life with her younger brother Johnny and their mother
Laura. During a typical day at school Miranda’s teacher assigns the class a project.
They are to monitor and record what happens when an asteroid hits the moon. The
results of such an event was devastating. The moon is knocked closer to the earth

Due to all the disasters being recorded stores begin to close and there
becomes a minimal supply of food. School closes and everybody is told to enjoy
what possibly might be, there last summer. After a long debate with herself, Laura
allows Johnny to go away for his baseball camp. He would be able to work for fresh
food on a nearby farm. Laura’s anxiety of starvation gets the best of her and she
suggests rationing the food for the sake of preservation. Miranda is not too fond of
this idea and expresses her fear and anger to her mother. Miranda and her mother
experience many arguments through the course of the first couple of weeks since
the incident of the moon. Miranda seeks escape at a place called millers pond. There
she meets and starts a relationship with Dan. The relationship is short lived when
Dan decides that he wants to leave town. Over the weeks, more and more of
Miranda’s life tears apart. Slowly many of her friends leave town. She also
experiences the death of her dearest friend Megan.
