US II The fight for civil rights goes back further than just the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights advocates were advocating for equal treatment and equal laws as the white men. The history of what happened before the Civil Rights Movement is very harsh. It could start as far back as Jim Crow, which is a law that implements segregation in the south. Plessy V. Ferguson was a court case in 1896 who’s ruling was “separate but equal,” but people of color were never held to the equal standard they decided in court. Also during this time, they had disenfranchisement laws, which were laws regulating polls in former confederate states. The laws state that when a person of color wants to go to the polls; there is a poll tax that must be made months in advance. They also had literacy tests, which tests the person to see if they can read and interpret laws and the constitution. The last portion of this law was that only white people could vote in the democratic primaries. When these laws developed, blacks immediately combated the effects of them. …show more content…

Washington, who was prominent during this time, came up with the plan that if blacks could become literate and work hard to build better communities for the black population that they would eventually earn respect from the white people who are segregating themselves from them to begin with. W.E.B DuBois played a crucial part in the Civil Rights Movement because he was one of the founders of the NAACP, which stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Marcus Garvey also played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement because he organized the largest non-religion African American movement in history and it was called the United Negro Improvement
