Growing up in a lower-middle class home, I have learned to be modest and frugal. I have also learned that nothing comes free and that everything must be earned through determination and hard work. So when I joined the Cub Scouts at age 7, I was determined to excel and achieve the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. Since then, I have been intent on changing things for the better in everything I participated in. Originally the club was known as Boys Club of America and their goal was to keep young boys off the streets and provide them with a more influential place to go. However, it wasn’t until 1990 that girls became involved and the club was renamed the Boys and Girls Club (www.bgca.org). Today, the Boys and Girls Club’s mission is to help boys and girls realize what they are capable of and become accomplished citizens. The program also wants children to be aware of their own importance, impact, helpfulness, and ability as individuals (www.bgcsnv.org).

Dear Ms. Julia Galef, I hope you are doing well. I am Hailey Selly and I am reaching out to you from M-State, a community college in Minnesota. Pearl Harbor is just one event that has shaped American history. With this being a topic of interest to many, authors like to use it as a setting for a fictional story. Juveniles are the future of this country and we must treat them as such. The United States began its war on drugs in the 1970s in order to combat the increasing use of illegal drugs coming in from Latin American countries. The war on drugs resulted in the formation of the Drug enforcement agency (DEA), mandatory minimums for drug charges just to name a few. The war on drugs created a system where the United States has the highest prisoner population per capita in the world with fifty percent of those being incarcerated for drug offenses.
