Brainstorm By Daniel Siegel: An Analysis

The adolescence stage is surrounded by many myths that society has created over the years. Society believes that when a child becomes a teenager, he or she will become rebellious and crazy. Thus, society doesn’t understand that adolescence is the most challenging stage in the human development since this is the stage when we are drastically developing physically, cognitively, and psychologically. In fact, Daniel Siegel a clinical professor of psychiatry, states that “adolescence is not a period of being “crazy” or “immature.” It is an essential time of emotional intensity, social engagement, and creativity” (Siegel, 2013, p.4). Hence, Siegel suggest that “for both adolescents and adult, keeping the lines of communication open is the most basic principle of navigating these years well” therefore, “it is vital to keep the lines of connection and communication open and to remember that we all–adolescents and adults – need to be members of a connected community” (p.26-27). On the contrary, chapter ten in our textbook mentions that when parents remain “supportive and nurturant and persistent in positive parenting, even when dealing with resistant and negative teens, their children become more flexible, effective problem-solvers” (Brooks, 2011, p.309-310). The textbook and the book have similar suggestions about how parents can have better relationships with their teens. Siegel mentions that communication is essential for both the parent and the teen to form a healthy relationship.
